Collection Points
The Deposit Return System (DRS), identified by the volta brand, includes an organised collection network to ensure the effective return and processing of covered containers. Designed to meet the needs of both consumers and industry operators, the system incorporates automated solutions, a variety of Collection Points including manual options, and dedicated units for handling large volumes, ensuring accessible and efficient operation across the entire national territory.
Obligations for Collection Points
Acceptance of Containers
Collection Points must accept all containers covered by volta, provided they are empty, intact, and properly marked with a barcode corresponding to an eligible GTIN/EAN identification code, as well as identified with the volta symbol, regardless of where they were purchased. It is mandatory to guarantee consumers the full refund of the deposit paid.
Accessibility and Convenience
Collection Points must ensure that the areas designated for returning containers covered by volta are clearly signposted, visible, and easily accessible to consumers.
Storage
Collection Points must provide suitable spaces for the temporary storage of returned containers and must define, in coordination with SDR Portugal, the method and frequency of collection.
Compliance with Requirements
Collection Points must ensure that only containers duly registered in volta and approved by SDR Portugal are accepted.
Deposit Disclosure
Collection Points must ensure that the deposit amount is clearly itemised in the price list and on the receipt or purchase invoice, shown as an amount separate from the product price.
Consumer Information
Collection Points must provide clear and accessible information about the container return process and deposit refund. They must also display, in a visible location, the certificate of registration with SDR Portugal.
Types of Collection Points
volta Points
volta Points consist of automated machines for returning containers (also known as RVM – Reverse Vending Machines), installed in retail establishments or other public spaces that allow for the automated return of containers covered by volta. Once the container is accepted, the machine issues a voucher corresponding to the deposit amount, which can be transferred to a user account, redeemed at the point of sale, or refunded in cash. These machines require electricity and internet connectivity to report data in real time to SDR Portugal, ensuring system traceability and monitoring. All devices must comply with the technical requirements set out in the RVM Specification. volta Point operators may choose to purchase or lease these machines, depending on their needs and the volume of containers collected.
Manual Collection
Manual collection allows retailers to accept volta-covered containers over the counter. To be accepted, containers must be empty, undamaged, display the volta symbol, and have a barcode corresponding to an eligible GTIN/EAN identification code. This option provides a practical collection solution for smaller establishments without the capacity to install RVMs, ensuring that consumers continue to have access to the DRS (volta).
volta Kiosks
volta Kiosks complement the collection network by offering an additional drop-off point in high-traffic areas. These compact, automated units allow for the return of more containers than conventional RVMs, making access to the system easier in urban and commercial areas. The volta Kiosks ensure immediate recording of returned containers and credit the corresponding deposit value, providing a convenient solution for consumers and industry operators.
Counting and Sorting Centres
Containers returned to Collection Points are sent to Counting and Sorting Centres, contributing to the system’s efficiency and traceability. These facilities ensure the proper handling of collected containers, which are identified, sorted by material, and prepared for recycling in accordance with the highest quality standards and environmental requirements.
Infrastructure
volta‘s infrastructure has been designed to ensure efficient coverage across the entire national territory, guaranteeing both consumer accessibility and system operability. It consists of two main elements: Collection Points, where consumers return containers, and support and processing units, which handle the management, sorting, and preparation of containers for recycling.

Guide for Collection Points
Criteria for the eligibility of containers under the Deposit Return System (DRS), identified by the volta brand.
Eligible Containers
The following containers can be returned under the Deposit Return System (DRS), provided they display the volta symbol:
- Bottles and cans, made of plastic, metal and aluminium, under 3 litres.
Containers must be empty, undamaged, and
have a readable barcode.
Non-Eligible Containers
The following containers are not covered by the system and should be recycled through the appropriate channels:
- Glass beverage containers
- Dairy products, such as milk and yogurt-based drinks
Deposit Value
The deposit value corresponds to an amount paid at the time of purchase for each packaging unit covered by volta, which is returned when the packaging is delivered at a Collection Point. This value is set at €0.10 (ten cents) per item, regardless of its volume or material, in accordance with Order No. 432/2026 of 15 January, published in the Portuguese Official Gazette.
At the time of return, a receipt is issued, which can later be converted into cash, used as a store discount, linked to a loyalty card, or integrated into future digital solutions. Alternatively, the deposit value can be donated to a participating organisation, depending on the volta Point where the return is made, namely Liga dos Bombeiros Portugueses, Cáritas Portuguesa, Liga para a Proteção da Natureza, or Liga Portuguesa dos Direitos do Animal. For tax purposes, a donation receipt can be requested directly from the organisation, using the number shown on the voucher as proof.
